Budget to Build a Stronger and Fairer Britain

Welcoming today’s Budget, Gavin Strang MP said:

“I warmly welcome today’s extra money for the NHS and schools. Labour has delivered a massive extra boost for the NHS. The people of Edinburgh East & Musselburgh should benefit from the immediate cash injection of an extra £2 billion – part of the largest ever package of spending on the NHS. This means that the Scottish Executive has an extra £173 million to spend if it chooses on health.

“And I welcome too the extra additional money for schools. Edinburgh East & Musselburgh will benefit from the extra £1 billion announced today, making good Labour’s pledge that education will be our number one priority. Its money to recruit more teachers and buy books. Money again to continue improving standards in all our schools. Again I assume that the Scottish Executive will want this money to go straight into Scotland’s schools.

“Today’s Budget was also good news for the families and children of Edinburgh East & Musselburgh. Up to 1,566 families stand to benefit from the increase in the Working Families Tax Credit. And next month 8,800 families in Edinburgh East & Musselburgh will gain when Child Benefit is raised to £15 for the eldest child – its highest ever level. And with 1p cut in the basic rate of tax next month, it means the tax burden on working families in Edinburgh East & Musselburgh will, by next year, be the lowest since 1972.

“Today in Edinburgh East & Musselburgh we have stability and low inflation. And, with the New Deal, youth unemployment in Edinburgh East & Musselburgh is down by -76% and long term unemployment is down by -58% since the election.

“This is a budget to deliver security and opportunity for all.’
